Causes:
Smallpox is caused by infection having to do with the variola virus. Smallpox can be transmitted directly from person to person, but in order for that to happen they would need to be face-to-face for a long time. It can be transferred through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. People can also be infected just by an infected person being in the building with them, because it could go through the ventilation system and go from room to room. Having contact with an object that an infected person has touched can also be a way that it can be spread.
How long are you infected? Will they die? Are there lingering effects?
You are infected with smallpox for approximately 43 days starting with the first symptom and ending with the last. You could also say that there are lingering effects because you are left with deep scars in your body from where the scabs fell off. There is also a great possibility that if you get smallpox you may die.
How can smallpox be treated or cured?
No cure for smallpox exists, so if somehow the disease ever started up again our only treatment was to keep everybody who got infected would need to be kept isolated. If the infected people were kept isolated then they couldn’t spread it and it would eventually die off.
