Smallpox:
Smallpox is a contagious and often deadly disease that has affected many people for thousands of years. Naturally occurring smallpox has not been an issue since 1980. However scientists keep the disease for research purposes only.
Symptoms of smallpox and how they are diagnosed:
Symptoms of smallpox usually start to occur 12 to 14 days after you have been infected. During the incubation period of about 7 to 17 days, you cannot infect any other people and you feel and look healthy as well. Following this period however, sudden symptoms occur. Symptoms like having a fever, a headache, severe fatigue, horrible back pains, possible vomiting, and you are just generally very uncomfortable. A few days after the symptoms occur red spots appear on your face, then hands, forearms, and later on the main part of your body. Within a few days these spots become blisters filled with clear fluid, which turns into pus. Around 8 to 9 days later scabs begin to form and later fall off, leaving deep scars. Smallpox is diagnosed by analyzing the antibodies your body makes in response to the virus in a lab.
